Overview

Use the Diagnostic Tool (Appliance Hardware Diagnostic Tool) to make sure that the Check Point appliance hardware is working properly and complies with the appliance specifications.

The Diagnostic Tool is installed on Check Point appliances that are shipped with factory installed images of R76 and later.

Supported Check Point appliances

The Diagnostic Tool is supported only on these appliances:

Recommended Usage

Use the Diagnostic Tool if you think that the appliance hardware is malfunctioning.
For example: boot errors, multiple reboots, connectivity problems with the line cards and NICs.

Limitations

• The Diagnostic Tool provided in this article does not support the 'Spec Test' on 3200 / 5000 / 15000 / 23000 and Smart-1 405 / 410 / 525 / 625 / 5050 / 5150 / 6000-L / 6000-XL appliances (for 'Spec Test' on those appliances, use the built-in Diagnostic Tool).
• On 21000 appliances with SAM card, testing of the SAM card is not supported.
• USB storage media is required to be plugged into the USB port on the appliance (if USB storage is not available, then contact Check Point Support for a workaround).
• Running the Hardware Diagnostic Tool from USB and CD-ROM is not supported for versions R80 and above. Running the tool from the appliance is supported in these versions.

Using the Diagnostic Tool

You can use the Diagnostic Tool from LCD panel or connect to the Console port with a Terminal emulation program. For more information about how to run the Diagnostic Tool, see the Appliance Hardware Diagnostic Tool Administration Guide.

Notes:

• For appliances that do not have the Diagnostic Tool installed, it is necessary to run the tool from a USB storage device ('LiveUSB'). This is supported on versions R77.30 and lower.
  
• When Diagnostic Tool is run from a CD-ROM ('LiveCD'), it works much slower than when it is run from a USB storage device ('LiveUSB').
  
• When connecting the loopback plug, you have to wait until the interface blinks and only then insert the loopback plug (otherwise, the Networking Test might fail on that interface).

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. The Diagnostic Tool downloaded and installed on USB/CD/LiveCD is only supported on versions R75, R76 and R77.x.
2. The ISOmorphic tool is no longer a part of this ZIP archive. To get the latest version of the ISOmorphic tool, download it separately as described in sk65205, and use it for the selected ISO.
3. The Diagnostic Tool provided in this article does not support the 'Spec Test' on 3200 / 5000 / 15000 / 23000 appliances (for 'Spec Test' on those appliances, use the built-in Diagnostic Tool).

Troubleshooting

• For pre-installed tool, if after reboot and selecting the 'HW Diagnostics' option in the Boot menu, the tool does not run, this could be due to HDD problem - try using the USB version.
  If the issue persists, contact Check Point Support.
  
• Some USB drives do not work with the Diagnostic Tool. If one USB device fails to boot with the Diagnostic Tool, make sure to try another vendor of USB drives.
  
• If the Diagnostic Tool does not start properly, make sure that the USB storage device works correctly. We recommend that you try to use a different USB port on the appliance.
  If the issue persists, contact Check Point Support.
  
• Unable to save logs on external USB storage device: the USB device must be formatted with FAT, FAT32, EXT2 or EXT3 file system. NTFS or extFAT file systems are not supported.
  Make sure that there is no encrypted partition left on the storage device.
  If the issue persists, make sure that the USB storage device works properly and try to use a different USB port on the appliance.
  
• After network test, name of certain interfaces appears with '_rename' suffix in the log file. The issue is in naming only, does not affect any functionality - may be safely ignored. This naming issue happens only in the Diagnostic Tool and does not affect any the regular running configuration.
  All other logging information referring to the interface is not affected by the name and refers to the physical interface.
  
• The Diagnostic Tool fails to run on UTM-1 570 appliance. Some older UTM-1 570 appliances have CPU that does not support PAE.
  Download the Diagnostic Tool for 'UTM-130 and UTM-1 270 appliances' and run it on the problematic UTM-1 570 appliance.
  
• After a successful network test, the following message appears in the log for some interfaces: 'Interrupt test: Failed, ignoring'.
  This message does not necessarily indicate a hardware problem of the interface and can be safely ignored.
  
• During networking test on 21000 appliances with SAM card, internal interfaces might show up, for example: eth-bp1d1 and eth-bp1d2.
  There is no option to connect these internal interfaces with the Loopback adapter. Therefore, the connectivity test should be skipped on these interfaces by pressing the 's' key.
  
• On Smart-1 appliances (205, 210, 225, 3050, and 3150 models), there might be a delay between the display on LCD screen and the display on console.
  
• On old Smart-1 appliances (25, 25B, 50 and 150 models) with hardware RAID, the Disk tests are not supported.

Known issues in Hardware Diag

This section is relevant for HWDiag which was clean installed in specific version.
Changing HWdiag version can be done by install CP releases via CD/USB/LOM.

Important: CPUSE or JHF do not update hw diag, which mean hw diag of machine does not change when upgrading via CPUSE, and remains hw diag of original version.

You can use the Advanced Filter function to copy and paste values skip duplicates in Excel. Please do as follows.

1. Select the column range you need to copy and paste values skipping duplicates, and click Data > Filter. Then click the Advanced button as below screenshot shown.

You can also apply the below array formula to extract only the unique values from a specified column range in Excel.

1. Select a blank cell to place the first unique value, enter the below formula intoit and then press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys simultaneously.

This section will recommend the Select Duplicate & Unique Cells utility of Kutools for Excel. With this utility, you can easily select all values skipping duplicates in a certain range, and then copy and paste all unique values to anywhere as you need. Please do as follows.

Before applying Kutools for Excel, please download and install it firstly.

1. Select the range you need to get only the unique values, then click Kutools > Select > Select Duplicate & Unique Cells. See screenshot:

2. In the Select Duplicate & Unique Cells dialog box, select the All unique (Including 1st duplicates) option in the Rule section, and then click the OK button. Then the second Select Duplicate & Unique Cells dialog box pops up to tell you how many unique cells are selected, please click the OK button. See screenshot:
